Stained ash veneer - a colourful addition to the office

Stained ash veneer enables you to combine natural materials and colours in an exciting way. The wood surface takes on colour while maintaining the lively grain and natural appearance. As the technique can be used on all smooth, veneered surfaces, it enables you to design entire environments uniformly. The new stains also match fabrics and other Kinnarps Colour Studio materials making it easy to match.

The 11 stains have been divided into colour families of similar hues, tone on tone, that can be mixed and matched or used to give a monochrome impression: dark red and soft pink, dark green and grey green, dark blue and greyish blue, dark grey and medium grey and medium brown, white and black.

EXCLUSIVE STAINS

The new stains were exclusively developed for Kinnarps in collaboration with Kinnarps Colour Studio and architects. They were then developed into products by our surface treatment specialists. Since the 1950s we have offered a choice of stained veneers for workplace furniture. Our decision to maintain our expertise and develop the necessary technology in our production facilities is proving a wise investment, as stained veneer is once again in demand among many architects and interior designers.

  "We manufacture our surfaces in-house, which gives us control over which stains and colours we want to create, rather than being limited to what is available on the market," says Benny Grönborg, surface treatment technician at Kinnarps and specialist in staining for 40 years.

LIKE PAINTING IN WATERCOLOURS

Stained veneer is available on furniture with smooth surfaces – from desks and meeting tables to conference tables and various types of storage. It is primarily oak and ash veneers that are stained. The light hue of ash lends itself to colourful stains. Based on market demand and insights into coming trends as seen by architects, Benny and his colleagues created these unique stains.

  "A stain consists of water and colour pigments. It is the combination of pigments that determine how the colour will be perceived. A stain is actually the same as a watercolour and when you stain a veneered surface, it is comparable to painting with watercolours." 

ENHANCES GRAIN

The stain and colour pigments penetrate deep into the wood pores, enhancing the grain and lustre of the wood and bringing the surface to life. The stain itself is not durable so it is sealed in with a UV lacquer. This gives the surface good attributes for withstanding strain and wear and tear. If you spill coffee over your desk, you can simply wipe it off. The lacquer stops the liquid from penetrating the wood.         
The quality of the veneer that is stained is critical to the end result. As we produce our own veneer, we are able to control the appearance and attributes of the material in detail, even in our wide ranges.
For architects and customers to be able to furnish large public environments, offices and schools uniformly and harmoniously, it is important to maintain a high and consistent quality level of veneer finishes and to have good production capacity.

A SUSTAINABLE OPTION

Stained veneer is a sustainable and environmentally friendly option. The entire process is optimised from an environmental and sustainability point of view. The stain consists of water and pigment and the lacquer, which contains no solvents, is applied in a self-contained process. The furniture is also tested in our accredited test lab to ensure that it meets customer requirements and the standard-based requirements of our various markets.
