Small Height-Adjustable Desk for Compact Spaces

Furnishing an office with limited space can feel like a challenge. When every square metre counts, the choice of furniture becomes crucial for both functionality and comfort. A small height-adjustable desk is therefore an excellent option. It combines flexibility, ergonomics and practical design, while taking up no more space than necessary.

Why a Small Height-Adjustable Desk is a Smart Choice

Height-adjustable desks have become increasingly popular in offices – and for good reason. They allow you to alternate between sitting and standing positions, reducing strain on your back, neck and shoulders. For small offices, they also provide a solution that maximises space.

A small height-adjustable desk doesn’t take up unnecessary room, yet still offers a work surface large enough for a computer, documents and other essential tools. Its compact design makes it easy to place the desk in tight corners or along a wall without making the room feel cramped.

Kinnarps’ height-adjustable desks are available from 800 mm in width and upwards – a smart design that fits even where space is limited.

How to Choose the Right Height-Adjustable Desk

A height-adjustable desk can be beneficial for both health and productivity, but in small spaces it’s important to choose the right model. By considering size, functionality and ergonomics, you can create a workstation that is both flexible and efficient.

1. Measure the Space Carefully

Before buying a small height-adjustable desk, it’s essential to measure the available space. Several factors influence which size will be the best fit:

Width: Small desks typically range between 60 and 120 cm in width. Make sure there is enough space around the desk for a chair and movement.

Depth: To work comfortably, the depth should be at least 60 cm, ideally up to 70 cm if you use multiple screens. Deeper desks can feel bulky in small spaces.

Height: Since the desk is height-adjustable, check that it can be adapted for both sitting and standing positions for the intended user.

Shape: A height-adjustable desk doesn’t have to be a standard shape. We offer rectangular desks for classic workstations, models with a bevelled edge (belly cut), oval and round desks for more open environments, as well as corner desks that maximise space in smaller rooms. The right shape makes a big difference for both working comfort and how efficiently you use the room.

2. Prioritise Ergonomics

The size of the desk is important, but ergonomics are crucial for your wellbeing. A small height-adjustable desk should be adjustable so that your arms, wrists and back are properly supported. Here are a few tips:

  • Your arms should be able to rest at roughly a 90-degree angle when seated at the desk.
  • Ensure that the desk height in a standing position allows your shoulders to remain relaxed and not raised.
  • Combine the desk with an adjustable chair for optimal comfort.

Genom att tänka på ergonomi även i små utrymmen kan du skapa en arbetsplats som minskar risk för belastningsskador och ökar produktiviteten.

3. Features to Consider

When choosing a small height-adjustable desk, the following features can be essential:

  • Electric height adjustment: Makes it easy to switch between sitting and standing.
  • Cable management: Small spaces can quickly become cluttered, so a cable solution keeps the workspace neat and practical.

4. Adapt to Your Tasks

The size of the desk also depends on the type of work you do. If you often work with papers or multiple screens, the desk will need a bit more surface area, even if it’s small. If you mainly use a laptop, a narrower desk is usually sufficient.

  • For computer work: If you primarily use a laptop or a single monitor, a narrower desk of about 80–100 cm in width and 60 cm in depth is often enough. This provides sufficient space for a keyboard, mouse and notes without taking up too much room.
  • For work with multiple screens: If you frequently use several monitors or need to spread out documents, choose a slightly wider desk, around 110–120 cm. A depth of 70 cm can offer better working comfort and more room to organise materials.
  • For meetings and collaboration: If you occasionally need space for colleagues or short meetings at your desk, opt for a desk that is deep enough but still narrow enough to avoid making the room feel cramped. Small round or semi-round tabletops can be an option in very tight spaces.
  • For equipment storage: If you have a printer, scanner or other technical equipment, consider adding a pedestal or a wall-mounted screen with shelves. This way, you can fit everything you need without cluttering the work surface.
