REMOVING THE OBSTACLES TO SIT-STAND WORKING

Our recently-released Agile Working Insight Report provided a snapshot of agile working practices amongst 5,300 employees within 60 of our customers across Europe. One of the most striking - and worrying - statistics we uncovered was this: 92% of respondents spend little or no time standing up during the working day.

INCREASINGLY HARD TO IGNORE

Long regarded as a slightly quirky affectation, there’s mounting medical evidence that a more mobile, less sedentary working day has significant health benefits. As well as helping combat obesity, it can reduce the risk of serious conditions including type 2 diabetes, heart attack and cancer, and even increase life expectancy.

In 2015 the British Journal of Sports Medicine published an expert statement commissioned by Public Health England and entitled The sedentary office: a growing case for change towards better health and productivity  Among its recommendations was that seated work should be regularly broken up with standing work and vice versa, with height-adjustable workstations highly recommended.

At the time Dr Ann Hoskins, Deputy Director for Health and Wellbeing, Healthy People at Public Health England, said: ‘This research supports the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations to minimise how much we sit still. Being active is good for your physical and mental health. Simple behaviour changes to break up long periods of sitting can make a huge difference.’

BETTER THAN EVER

As the case for sit-stand working gets harder and harder to ignore, the good news is that height-adjustable desks are now more affordable, more versatile and better looking than ever; in fact, they are now comparable in almost all regards to traditional personal workstations.

So if you are considering updating your workplace – whether or not you are transitioning to agile working – there really is no excuse not to include a significant sit-stand component. If the feedback we get from customers is any indication, your employees will certainly thank you for it.
