Wool – the natural material choice for sustainable office environments

Wool is a natural material with unique properties that have evolved and been refined over thousands of years. In addition to its natural beauty, wool offers a range of functional benefits – it is dirt-repellent, flame-retardant and has self-cleaning properties. These qualities make wool a perfect material choice for interior design solutions where aesthetics, sustainability and function are all in focus. Discover why wool is a smart choice for office environments.

Wool = a sustainable material

Wool fabric is a natural material that meets high environmental and quality standards – perfect for those who want to make a sustainable choice. All wool fabrics in our material and colour range are labelled with EU Ecolabel, Oeko-Tex and Möbelfakta.

Wool is also a material that retains its shape. Thanks to its natural elasticity, wool quickly returns to its original form. This makes it particularly suitable for upholstering larger pieces of furniture, such as sofas and armchairs, where seating marks can otherwise appear over time. If pilling occurs in the fabric, it can easily be brushed away and the fabric looks like new again.

A comfortable temperature all year round

Thanks to its built-in ability to adapt to the surrounding climate, wool helps maintain a comfortable body temperature, whether it is warm or cold. Sitting on furniture upholstered in wool fabric never feels sweaty, even though the fibres have the ability to absorb moisture. This is because the fabric can transport both moisture and excess heat – what we often describe as the fabric “breathing”.

Avoid static electricity with wool fabric

The fact that wool absorbs moisture also means that wool fabrics are naturally antistatic. Perhaps you have experienced getting a small electric shock at your desk? This is caused by static electricity that often builds up in environments with a lot of IT equipment. On plastic or synthetic flooring, the furnishings are also at high risk of becoming static. To avoid this, wool is always the best material choice.

A naturally flame-retardant upholstery material

Thanks to the high moisture content in its fibres, wool fabric has natural flame-retardant properties. When exposed to extreme heat, the material neither ignites, melts nor drips, instead it chars in a similar way to human hair. Kinnarps wool fabrics contain no added chemicals, which means no hazardous gases are released in the event of a fire.

Wool can be soft and comfortable

A common perception is that wool feels itchy against the skin. The wool fabrics in Kinnarps Colour Studio are made from worsted wool, which means the shorter fibres have been removed and the longer fibres are aligned in parallel. This gives the fabric a softer and smoother surface that feels comfortable against the skin.

A material that is easy to keep clean

Wool fabrics absorb liquids slowly. This means you usually have time to wipe up spilled liquid before it penetrates the fibres and forms a stain. Thanks to its antistatic properties, wool does not attract dirt and dust. It is also “self-cleaning” and has antibacterial properties that help prevent unpleasant odours.

When are other materials more suitable than wool?

Wool is a fantastic material that works well in many environments thanks to its natural feel, durability and exclusive expression. However, in certain settings – such as schools and within health and care environments – there are particularly high demands on cleaning and durability.

In these cases, other materials such as washable synthetic fabrics or hard-wearing artificial leather may be a better choice. They make it easier to keep furniture fresh in environments with heavy wear and frequent use.

We always help you find the right material based on the environment, usage and functional requirements, so you get both the right feel and long service life.
